Charles Justin was a highly successful Melbourne architect, best known for his company SJB’s work in large-scale high-rise commercial buildings. But Charles with his wife Leah were also avid collectors of edgy, contemporary art and for the past 40 years they have collected a large collection of work which was unveiled last year at the Glen Eira City Gallery. The abstractionist collection features works from their passionate and obsessive collecting and showcases Charles Justin’s architectural heritage in his curatorial eye.
Works featured in the exhibition cover only a quarter of the extensive archive and showcases paintings, sculpture and video art.
The Justins have now almost completed construction of their new home which will also feature a major new private gallery to show off the work as well as providing a space for future exhibitions. The new development is not new to Europe or America but is not yet widely accepted as a part of the Australian art scene.
InsideArt’s Michel Lawrence was commissioned to0 produce a half hour documentary on the collection to coincide with the exhibition and now the new gallery. Michel talks with Charles Justin and several of the featured artists in a revealing interview about collecting art. The exhibition was curated by highly regarded curator Diane Soumilas.
